Area II History

Area II was born in 1977 as a result of the efforts of Lady Marie T. Campbell*. Lady Campbell was the pioneer for Area II, serving two four-year terms as Area II Director from 1977 to 1981 and from 1993 to

1997. Lady Campbell was the organizer and president of our first chapter in Area II, the Trenton Chapter located in Trenton, New Jersey. She also served a term as the National Historian for Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc. Lady Campbell worked diligently building the foundation of making Area II

the “Awesome Area II” that it is today.

Lady Campbell was responsible for chartering a total of six (6) chapters: Trenton, New Jersey – 1975; Queens Empire, Queens New York – 1977; Long Island, New York - 1977; Baltimore, Maryland – 1978; Washington Metro, DC – 1980; Tidewater, Virginia – 1995.

Our second Area II Director was Barbara Lett Simmons,* who served from 1981 – 1985. Lady
Simmons exemplified what an Area II Director should be and chartered three (3) chapters during her term in office. These chapters are as follows: Willingboro, New Jersey -1982; Northern Beltway, Maryland – 1983; Queensboro New York -1984.

The third Area II Director was Clarice LaV Brooks, who served us well from 1985 – 1989*. Living up to
the standard set by our previous Area II Directors, and wanting to support the growth of chapters in our region, Lady LaV Brooks chartered four (4) chapters. They are: Richmond, Virginia – 1986; Congressional, DC – 1986; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – 1988; Potomac, Maryland – 1988.

Lady Barbara Brown,* served as Area II's fourth Area Director from 1989 to 1993, chartered the Gotham, New York Chapter in 1992 and helped put structure
into place during her tenure.

Lady Marie Campbell served as the fifth Area II Director from 1993-1997. This was her second term as
Area II Director.

The sixth Area II Director was Lady Ethel Charles – Perry,* serving with distinction from 1997 to 2001.

With distinction and grace Lady Beatrice C. Watford served as seventh Area II Director from 2001 to
2005 and was able to charter the Hampton Roads Chapter in Hampton, Virginia in 2004.

Lady Delores H. Chriss* served as our eighth Area II Director from 2005 to 2009. Her style and commitment to the organization and our region made her a natural for chartering three (3) chapters.  They are: Alexandria City, Virginia – 2007; Dale City-Prince William County, Virginia – 2008; Prince George’s County, Maryland – 2009.

Lady Francine B. Jarvis served as the ninth Area II Director from 2009 to 2013. Her positive attitude
and enduring faith allowed her to charter two (2) chapters during her term. The chapters chartered by Lady Francine are the following: Washington, DC – 2012; Southern Maryland – 2012.

Lady Helena Dodson was our tenth Area II Director, serving from 2013 to 2017. Under her term, Area II completed its endowment of the Marie Campbell Scholarship, purchased its life membership to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), became a chartered member of the National African American Museum, and accepted a land donation from the Lady Marie Campbell estate in Trenton, New Jersey. This donation is the first land donation in the Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc. history. Also during her tenure, two additional scholarship levels were added to the annual Area II Scholarship.  Within her four years, $12,000 worth of scholarships were awarded. Lastly, the Area II Franchell Boswell memberships increased from six (6) as of July 2013 to fifty-four (54) in April 2017. She chartered one chapter during her term: Patuxent River, Maryland - 2017.

Our Eleventh Area Director is Lady Sandra R. Clark from 2017 to present. In Lady Sandra’s first seven month in office she chartered Central Virginia Chapter  - 2017 and Stafford County (Virginia) Chapter - 2018. There are rumors that there may be one or two more in the making.

Presently we have 14 active, Enthusiastic, filled with Energy and Excitement chapters. Chapters presently active: Trenton, New Jersey; Queens Empire, New York; Baltimore, Maryland;  Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Gotham, New York; Hampton Roads, Virginia; Alexandria City, Virginia; Dale City-Prince William County, Virginia; Prince George’s County, Maryland; Washington, DC; Southern Maryland, Maryland;
Patuxent River, Maryland; Central Virginia, Virginia; Stafford County, Virginia.

Since we’ve come this far by faith, we will continue the legacy of strength and endurance, while working together for the betterment of our communities and our youth.  We are the Awesome and Amazing Area II.
